Tuna is one of the many different types of fish that does not have a lot of mercury in it. Other types of fish that have mercury in it include catfish, Pollock, and salmon. It is important to note however that white albacore tuna has a higher mercury content that that of light canned tuna.
Those who consume a significant amount of tuna which is considered to be around 6 ounces a day, will want to choose albacore tuna over the canned variety. Consuming too much mercury on a regular basis from eating fish can lead to mercury toxicity which can be harmful and in some cases lethal if enough of the right fish is consumed on a regular basis and the symptoms are gone untreated.
