What is alkaline water?

One of our readers asked the following question: What is alkaline water?

Alkaline water is also known as ionized water. It’s called alkaline water because it’s neither acidic nor neutral on the pH scale.
Alkaline water sometimes get’s praised as a cure for a wide range of medical conditions, but at the same time it also has many critics that aren’t convinced about these suggested benefits.

Although it can be slightly acidic, depending on it’s source, water usually is considered neutral on the pH scale, having a pH of 7.
To stay healthy our body needs to stay slightly alkaline, that’s why drinking alkaline water can be beneficial for your health.

Alkaline water has a pH of approximately 8 (The exact pH level depends largely on the brand or the equipment used to alkalise the water)
You can make almost any water alkaline by putting a strong alkaline substance in it like baking soda or bicarbonate. If the alkalinity water is the only thing you’re trying to improve, then I would suggest baking soda would be one of the simplest and cheapest ways to do it. But it’s certainly not the only way.

While alkaline water is also sold in bottles, most people add an alkalizer or water ionizer to their tap water system since over time this is the cheapest solution.
