Is Butter The Same As Lard?

Since lard is really nothing more than rendered or unrendered pig fat, it is no healthier than butter and in fact far less healthy. Although it is true that butter consists primarily of saturated fat, that is really all lard is. Lard used to be used in many different dishes along with shortening however butter is far more common in cooking because it isn’t quite as unhealthy and generally has a better taste to it.

While natural butter may be high in saturated fat, lard is composed completely of saturated fat and is therefore extremely unhealthy in a number of ways. Those who are looking for a healthier alternative to butter will definitely want to look to margarine, simply because it is a non or low-fat option and usually even costs less at the supermarket.
