Asparagus is officially classified as a spring vegetable is also considered to be a flowering perennial from the Asparagus genus. Although it is true that asparagus used to be considered part of the lily family like garlic and onions, those are now in the family Amaryllidaceae and asparagus is classified as being in the Asparagaceae family.
This plant is native to north Africa as well as Western Asia and most of Europe. It is a herbaceous plant which can grow up to nearly 60 feet tall. It is generally not considered to be a type of grass but rather just another plant from the Asparagus genus.
