Are Tomatoes In The Nightshade Family?

Tomatoes are part of what is called the “Nightshade” family. Green bell peppers, white potatoes, paprika are also part of this same family. They are all part of the larger botanical genus which is called the “Solanacaea” species.

In this family there are also poisonous and toxic plants which can be very dangerous if they are consumed, such as mandrake, herbane, jimson weeds, and belladonna.

Although the exact origin of the name “Nightshade” is still not known, there are some who say that it was named because of its both dangerous yet loving nature relating to the night as a way of comparing the two.
