Some diets require that sodium intake be kept to a minimum, and this requires having knowledge of which foods are high on sodium and which are not.
So what about tomatoes? Are tomatoes high on sodium?
Well, it depends on how they are prepared!
Fresh, raw tomatoes are actually quite low in sodium, even in large quantities. Even fresh cooked tomatoes don’t have much sodium.
Canned tomatoes, however, are packed full of sodium! 1 cup of canned tomatoes has up to 14% of the daily recommended amount. This is because salt is normally added during the canning process.
So if you’re going to eat tomatoes on a low sodium diet, make sure there is no salt added and you’ll be just fine.
