Are Strawberries Native To North America?

Strawberries are one of the first fruits to have ripened in both North and South America, enjoyed by the indigenous people of these lands for thousands of years. Although the exact origin of strawberries still remains somewhat a mystery, it is believed that this particular fruit is indigenous to the North and South Americas as well as Europe along with Asia.

Strawberries were not cultivated on a large scale until around the 17th century when two different American varieties were mixed together into a hybrid and as a result a large berry was created. A majority of the earlier strawberries were smaller in size, much like the ones you see today.
