Are Cherries Considered Stone Fruit?

Cherries are in fact considered to be a stone fruit as opposed to a berry which is commonly what they are mistaken for. This fruit is a stone fruit or “drupe” as they are sometimes referred to as; they have a fleshy outer part with an inner shell which consists of a pit or stone and a seed inside.

Cherries along with all other stone fruits develop just one carpel and they have very definitive and unique characteristics which separate them from other types of fruits, such as the pit that resides inside the fruit as well as the fleshy outer skin.
