Are Bananas Native to Australia?

Despite what many people around the world believe, bananas did not in fact originate in Australia. The banana is actually considered to be a berry and comes from one of the largest herbaceous plants in the world. Bananas are believed to have originated from the Southeastern part of Asia, dating all the way back to 5000 BCE.

By the 16th century the banana made it to Europe by way of Portuguese sailors, later going back to the United States. It wasn’t until quite a while later that the banana actually made it to Australia. The banana has a long history traveling from placed to place, but it is believed to first have started out in Southeastern Asia.
